Cycling in the Bruges countryside

  • The ‘Schellemolen’ along the Damme canal is one of the most photographed mills in the world. Formerly a wooden mill stood on the same spot, named the ‘Scellemeulen’. Today the mill, built in 1867, is owned by the Province of West Flanders and protected as a monument.   • Damme is a medieval town near Bruges, Knokke and Sluis. The city was once connected to the North Sea through the tidal inlet of the Zwin, and therefore an important outer harbour of Bruges. The top of the Church of Our Lady offers a magnificent view of the polder landscape.   • The Ijshoeve is situated in Damme along one of the many beautiful bicycle routes of Bruges’ Hinterland.   • Guido Reybrouck is a former Belgian professional cyclist. Guido is a legendary cyclist. Amongst his many victories were Paris-Tours, Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, the Amstel Gold Race and 6 stages in the Tour de France. He won the Belgian National Championship in 1966.   • The Schipdonk canal runs parallel to the Leopold canal, popularly known as ‘de Stinker’ (the stinker) and ‘de Blinker’ (the blinking one).
